When Should You See a General Physician?

Most symptoms don't need a specialist first

It's easy to feel unsure which kind of doctor to see when something feels off. In most cases, a general physician is the right first stop — they can assess a wide range of symptoms, start appropriate treatment, and refer you onward if something needs specialist attention.

A few situations worth not waiting on

As a general guide, it's worth booking a consultation rather than waiting things out when a symptom has lasted more than a few days without improving, when a fever persists beyond two to three days, when pain or discomfort is affecting your daily activity, or when you simply aren't sure what's going on and want it checked properly.

This is general guidance, not a diagnosis — if you're experiencing severe symptoms such as chest pain, difficulty breathing, or sudden severe pain, seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a routine appointment.

What to expect at the visit

A general medicine consultation usually starts with questions about your symptoms and history, followed by a physical examination, and — where useful — some basic tests. From there, your doctor will explain what's likely going on and what the next step should be, whether that's treatment, monitoring, or a referral.
