Fever & Infections
Most fevers are caused by common, self-limiting infections — but a proper examination is the only reliable way to rule out something that needs closer attention, especially if the fever is high or lasts more than a couple of days.
Fever is the body's response to infection or inflammation, and it can be caused by anything from a common viral illness to a bacterial infection needing antibiotics. The pattern of the fever, accompanying symptoms, and a physical examination all help narrow down the likely cause.
Treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause — supportive care and rest for most viral illnesses, or targeted treatment where a specific infection is identified.
Common Patient Concerns
- Fever lasting more than 2–3 days
- Fever with a rash, severe body ache, or persistent vomiting
- Recurrent infections
- Fever in someone with an existing chronic condition
When to Consult a Physician
- Fever has lasted more than two to three days without improving
- The fever is high or accompanied by severe symptoms (rash, breathing difficulty, confusion, persistent vomiting)
- You have an existing chronic condition and develop a fever

FAQs
Should I take antibiotics for any fever?
No — most fevers are caused by viral infections, which antibiotics do not treat. Antibiotics are only appropriate for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections, which is why a proper assessment matters before starting them.
